Stockport Air Raid Shelters scooped a much sought after regional tourism award.

The Air Raid Shelters gained the prestigious award for Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Manchester Tourism Awards 2010.

The panel of judges said that ‘the shelters are truly unique and a great asset within Stockport’s visitor attraction offer. With friendly and professional staff, all visitors can enjoy an authentic and very interesting experience. A hidden gem.’

When the shelters first opened in 1939, they were the largest purpose built civilian air raid shelters in the country. They re-opened as a museum in 1996 after having been imaginatively restored to give visitors a feel for the era.

Councillor John Smith, Executive Member for Leisure, said: “We are delighted to have won this much sought after award. Stockport Air Raid Shelter offers its visitors a truly unique insight into a very important period in our history. We are proud to have such a remarkable museum in our borough and hope that this award will encourage even more people to come and experience the sights and the sounds of Stockport Air Raid Shelters.”

By winning this award Stockport Air Raid Shelters will in the autumn represent Greater Manchester in the England’s North West Regional Awards competing against the winners from Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Liverpool and Merseyside in the category of Best Small Visitor Attraction. The winner qualifies for a place at the subsequent National Awards.
